Nurture Your Curls: Night time Care for Afro Hair

Establishing a night time routine for your hair is essential for maintaining its health and vitality. Proper hair care at night can significantly reduce damage caused by friction, environmental factors, and product build up. Afro hair is naturally more fragile and prone to dryness than other hair types, making it essential to adopt a proper night time routine to prevent damage while you sleep.

Did you know?

During the night, our hair undergoes several changes that are influenced by various factors, including our sleep position, environment, and hair care routine. As we sleep, the body enters a state of repair and regeneration, which also extends to our hair.

One significant process that occurs is the production of sebum, an oily substance secreted by the scalp. This natural oil helps to moisturize and protect both the scalp and hair strands. However, if you sleep with your hair loose on a rough pillowcase, this can lead to increased friction and potential damage.

Nighttime is an excellent opportunity for your hair care products to work their magic. Applying leave-in conditioners or oils before bed allows these treatments ample time to penetrate and nourish your strands overnight.

Here are some essential steps to consider:

Step 1 - Detangle

Before bed, use a wide-toothed comb or a soft brush to gently detangle your hair. Start from the tips and work your way up to avoid breakage.

 Step 2 – Cleanse

If you have oily hair or have used styling products, consider giving your hair a light cleanse before bed. Use a mild shampoo that won’t strip away natural oils. DO NOT go to sleep with wet or damp hair. This can create an environment conducive to mildew growth and increase the likelihood of breakage.

Step 3 – Condition

Apply a nourishing conditioner, focusing on the ends where damage tends to occur. For an extra boost, consider using a leave-in conditioner or treatment for added hydration overnight.

Step 4 – Moisturise

To lock in moisture, apply a lightweight oil or serum on the lengths of your hair. This will help prevent dryness and frizz while you sleep.

Step 5 – Braid or Twist

For those with longer hair, loosely braiding or twisting your locks can help prevent tangles and protect them from damage during the night.

Step 6 – Protect Your Hair

Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction that can lead to breakage and frizz. Alternatively, you can wrap your hair in a silk scarf or use a soft scrunchie to keep it secure without causing tension.

By incorporating these steps into your night-time routine, you’ll be well on your way to healthier, more manageable hair come morning!
